• somewhere my grandfather is stoked for me • she’s a beautiful thang ain’t she? • i call her Mary • after my grandmother • all my life I dreamed of working on & driving this 1931 Model A Ford Sedan that my grandfather started restoring back in ‘76 • mom told me that this was back right in the thick of when he was battling for his life • it’s incredible what power we can pass on to others or members of our family that we may never even meet through our passions our love and our creativity • much more than our job titles or our bank balances • it’s about who you are & not what you do • what you put into something • your heart • how you respond when the chips are down • i was talking to my cousin Jake recently about this and it struck me that before our grandfather passed he knew that he had grandchildren and family members who had no idea how to work these cars in the way that he did and yet he acted on faith that perhaps one of us would be interested in the same thing he was somewhere down the line and so he worked to finish the restoration before he left • an act of faith • he hand wrote basic operating and upkeep directions for the car and tucked them under one of the seats (found those when I was 8) and most importantly he silently left the car in a condition where all my friend Seth and i had to do in high school when we decided to really mess around with her was to put some gas, oil, a new battery and some anti freeze in and fire her up and drive her out the driveway • she started on the third try after sitting there for 20 years • i’ll never forget the shout that my Nan let out when Seth and I honked the horn as we went out of her garage and up the driveway • Seth ran alongside and jumped on the running board as i drove down elm st to the cemetery to pay respects to where he had been laid to rest • i had no idea how to drive this car at that point • she seemed to drive herself • she was excited to visit with him again • it was quite literally one of the happiest, most proud moments of my life • all sprung from a deep act of love from a man who i never met • love never dies • love hard • love often • be brave • onward forever • so much to be thankful for • www.imdb.me/gregoryhoyt

Are you constantly seeking to change yourself or fix yourself?
Are you alway seeking more knowledge or wider acceptance or validation from outer sources before you act on or accept your interests, artistry or instincts? Are you waiting until you have it all figured out or some parental figure in your life tells you that you are "ready" or "good enough"? If you are, be careful because it's very likely that that day will never come. It is my experience that even if that day does come and you hear the validation that you have longed for you may very well not believe it because it is not coming from YOU! You are the captain of this ship ~ you are steering the course ~ not anybody else ~ they don't have the right to, only you do! It is time to live life on your own terms and to begin, right now, AS YOU ARE. I think that this comes down to acceptance of what is and self acceptance of who and what we are, right now, in this very moment (the only moment that ever exists btw). Accepting your self and accepting your life and present moment reality is the basis from which you can build an authentic life and a growing creative outlook which leads to a growing creative output. This idea often runs counter to everything that we have been told in life especially after going through an education system where we are often taught to conform, to study and to get it "right". It is most likely that we have never been taught anything about acceptance and or gratitude for what is and where we are right now as a place to work from. Many of us don't have any idea about self forgiveness. Look it up! By the way, don't misunderstand me, acceptance is not giving up or throwing in the towel. Acceptance is an act of honesty and ownership that allows you to notice and acknowledge where you are in your journey. It also allows you to get present, look around you and take stock of what is actually happening in this moment. Acceptance, when practiced, can take you out of fear of all forms. As you practice accepting You and honoring You, you will steadily begin to trust your true inner voice, or as the Bible calls it "the still small voice" within. As you begin to trust it, it grows louder and as the force of it grows and then your instincts will become clearer and then actions will begin to naturally flow out of you and into the world that are unique to you and true to you. What could be better than that? The truth of you, flowing to you, through you and out into the very life that you are dreaming to create. Why wait for permission when you can begin today, AS YOU ARE!? Take a breath, take a walk, take a look around you and begin listening to what you heart is telling you, it will never lead you wrong. Onward forever. www.imdb.me/gregoryhoyt The life of an artist is really all about taking your first step whether you feel like you are ready to or not.
So, for example, this post here is a living, breathing example of that, it's my first blog entry! I am an Actor and an Improviser and a Producer of short films. I love to create things that are typically a little left of center and have heart. I am also an art painter that has no training and yet I've sold many of my paintings. I've dabbled in all types of creativity and the only thing that I am sure of at this point is that the most important thing that anyone who wants to live a creative life can count on is that you get out of it what you put in to it. That is one simple thing but that one thing encompasses a lot of topics and practices. Fear not, once you start you will figure them out as you go. My bullet points for living a creative life go like this: 1) What do you really love doing? 2) Do that. 3) Start now. Literally. Right now. Notice that I don't put in any "get the right training at expensive / prestigious school" steps or any "ask your parents / society / your friends for permission" steps or even any "be realistic, do something that is safe and wait until you are 65 and have (maybe) earned enough money and then do it then" steps. Based on my real life / real world creative living experience, the best thing to do is "JUST START". Start right from where you are. For better or worse. Take one small action in the direction that you want to move and whether or not that works out take another step after that and another step after that. And keep going. Onward forever. There's my new action for the day, more to come! www.imdb.me/gregoryhoyt |
